Social and prize giving this Thursday

 Last weeks super fun practical meeting resulted around 40+ of us descending on the streets of the St Annes area in a bid to get photographs to fit the 5 themes we were left by Ruth. The local people were seriously disturbed by us geeky camera carrying brigade and I hear there were a few funny remarks made. Although a few locals were game to helping us out as you will see in the images in a couple of weeks, even the wildlife and teddy bears came out to play and we were treat to a nice sunset as well. I cant wait to see the results. Many thanks to Julie Coombs for helping to arrange the photo rally.

This week we have yet another evening of fun scheduelled, but not at the school as per usual, this time we are meeting at the Langton court pub for a night of skittles and prize giving. There will be food provided to give you that extra little bit of energy to play hard at skittles.

I hope you have all had a chance to get and about in this gorgeous weather with your cameras. I see Andro and Myk certainly managed to capture a lovely sunset at Clevedon and another group of us were out photographing in the beautiful evening light yesterday in south Gloucestershire.  So dont think you have to go out on your own, if you want to team up with others from the group then do shout up at the meetings, or on the Flickr or facebook pages.

It certainly did contain nuts!

Last Thursday the lunatics took over the Asylum and we had Ian Coombs & Rich Price give us a presentation detailing the coach trip they and a few other coach members took to Dunkirk and around Fortress Europe.

It was a trip they will remember for quite some time and the rest of us will probably remember the presentation for a long time as well. They were introduced by Kevin Spiers who was in his best RAF uniform (although he was put on a charge for wearing the wrong tie). After that Rich took centre stage and talked us through the history of the retreat from Dunkirk and some of the harrowing stories from the places they had visited. All accompanied by pictures that he had taken plus some footage that had been taken way back when it actually happened.

After Rich’s bit we had a break and were treated to Bread and Ian’s Home made Plum Jam (so far I haven’t heard of anyone dying from food poisoning but you never know).

The second half of the evening saw Ian giving his talk very much in the style we had expected, some serious bits mixed in with a lot of his usual banter & joke’s. We learnt that his Grandfather had aided in the evacuation from Dunkirk and didn’t get home again for 4 years! The Flags that you see in the background of some of the pictures were from the ship his Grandfather served on.

It was a brilliant night with several club members that weren’t actually taking part in the presentation dressing up in 40’s clothes. Frogs, Snakes & Light Painting

We had a bit of a gap in our programme as our scheduled speaker had to cancel. Luckily for us club members Angi Nelson & Myk Garton offered to fill it for us. So instead of having to sit quietly and listen & look at someone else’s images we had a practical night.

Now practical nights can be a bit of a hit or miss affair. Sometimes we don’t get many people attending. Other times we get nearly every club member turn up. This Thursday was definitely one of  those times that nearly everyone turned up! Angi supplied us with various Frogs, Snakes & Reptiles plus a load of props & studio lights whilst Myk took charge of the Light Painting side of things.

After setting up the tables, props & animals Angi and her daughter with the aid of Richard Price gave those that wanted to stay inside and take images of the animals advice and help with the settings on their camera’s if they wanted or needed it.

Whilst all that was happening Myk Garton & Kevin Spiers took a group of members to the park across the road so they could create some Light Painting Images.

Oh I do like to be beside the sea side

On Saturday an intrepid bunch of adventurers, well six of us, went to Weston Super Mare for a stroll along the sea front and to take pictures. It was a camera club outing but it seemed that most of the club decided it wasn’t for them. Which was a shame because the sun was out and the only bad thing was the wind. Although that created a few good photo opportunities and I’m still annoyed that when the wave broke over the sea wall none of us had our camera’s pointed at the cyclist that got soaked.
We all met at the Pier for six o’clock (at least those of us that could tell the time did, mentioning no names, Kevin.) and decided to go along it and see what we could find. After dodging a van and a train, whilst walking along the pier, we got to the far end and wondered if we were going to get blown off it was so windy. We went inside for a bit and then went for some fish & chips. Barrie ordered his food, got a coffee and walked straight past the till only for the girl to come running after him as he hadn’t paid for any of it!
After the meal we strolled along the seafront. Nearly making it to the old Knightstone pier. If you want to know why we didn’t go all the way to the old pier keep an eye on the pictures in the Flickr group pool and you’ll see that we would have had to time it just right to get past a particularly wet section of the footpath. The waves were constantly breaking over the sea wall at one of the narrowest points of the pathway and we all chickened out. Because of the wind we decided to abandon our plans for a bit of Beach light painting and head home.

Red Hot Fun

Hanneke and I went a bit insane last night and went out with some of the Bristol Flickr Group to try out Light Painting and Wire wool spinning.

Wondering just how close my camera was to get this shot? Well if you visit this picture you can see my camera by the pillar on the left and the one on the right is Hanneke’s. Luckily for us they didn’t melt. Yes that was red hot metal flying around. I found out the hard way just how hot it was during this shot when a piece bounced off the pillar, straight through the gap and hit me on the top of my head. Good job I didn’t have enough hair for it to stick to!

So what do you think? Reckon we could do this in the Langton’s Car Park?!!!!!

Did I forget to tell you that membership to Flickr is FREE! That’s right it costs you nothing to join and it’s really easy to use. Once you’ve signed up you can join the clubs Flickr Group and share your photo’s with other club members or the whole world.

We held our first ever Flickr only competition throughout March with the theme “Lunch Break is Over”. If you want to see all the entrants then you can go visit the Gallery section of the clubs Flickr account.

The Club Flickr Account and your photographs.

As you know when a picture is needed online and you don't have it in your Flickr 'stream, you can't be bothered to upload it or you don't have a Flickr account then I use the clubs Flickr account to upload your photograph. Some of you sometimes get worried about your pictures being used by other people or want to make sure you get your name mentioned if your picture is used or mentioned anywhere. Well to help you understand what I do when I upload a photo using the clubs account I thought I'd write this and let you know how I try to make sure it's you that get’s the credit and not the club. It's also to let you know in case you suddenly turn around and decide that you’ve suffered amnesia and didn’t know what was going on. So below are the things that I do and why I do them.
When I upload one of your pictures you will see that I always try to give them a title that includes your name and in the description I try and give the reason why I uploaded it. An example can be seen by visiting this picture.
What you don’t see, unless you actually look for it, is the exif (some people call it meta just to be awkward) data that is uploaded along with the photograph. I’m not going to go really in depth here about what it is but I am going to try and explain why I have used certain words and phrases in the exif data. There are several different reasons why image files were designed to also carry this extra information. The one that really concerns us is to prove who the picture belongs to and provide contact details to anyone who would like to use that photograph.
I’ve just updated the exif data that I use when uploading to the clubs Flickr Account and if anyone finds what I have done to it unacceptable then please let me know and I will either change it (if several of you don’t like the updated version) or you can upload your own pictures in future, that way you make sure you use exif data that is specific to you and not the club.
I’m going to list the section titles then inside “” show the wording I’ve decided to use and, if necessary, then explain the reason for using the wording I have chosen;

There’s a section for the address of the photographer. I have, for convenience, put the clubs mailing address and contact phone number as the image creators address. I have also put the club as the creator of the Image and for the creators website I have put the clubs site.

Copyright - “© 2011 Original photographer / Reflex Camera Club”. The first bit should be self explanatory. The reason I’ve added Reflex Camera Club is not so that the club gets any credit nor is the club trying to grab your copyright. It’s easier to do it this way then people treat us as your agents and so attempt to get in touch with us so that we can let you know and then pass on your details to whoever is interested in your photograph. We’re not going to start charging you, asking for a percentage or attempt to claim any rights over your photograph.

Copyright Status - “Copyrighted”. It’s not up to me or the club to decide if you want your work to be copyrighted or not BUT I will also not decide that you do not want to copyright it so by having this as the selection anyone wanting to use your picture has to seek permission from you first. It’s the safest way for the club to operate if we are going to continue showing your pictures online using the Clubs Flickr Account.

Rights Usage Terms - “All Rights Reserved”. Means you reserve the right to refuse any or all use of your pictures for any use whatsoever.

Copyright Info URL - “http://www.flickr.com/people/reflex_camera_club”. Tells people that if they want more info on the copyright of the photograph they should go to that website. If you follow the link you will see that on the PROFILE page of the clubs Flickr Account I explain that they can contact the pictures owner by emailing the club.

Creator Job Title - “Member of Reflex Camera Club”. Well you are and it was the best & easiest thing I could think of
.
Instructions - “Do not reproduce in any form without prior written permission. All images remain the property and © copyright of the original photographer. If you wish to use an image then please get in touch and we will pass on your contact details to the original photographer.” Pretty long but I hope it gets across that the images are not the clubs but belong to whoever took the original photograph. Also it should be obvious to anyone reading it that they need to get in touch with the club so that we can put them in touch with you.

Creditline - “Reflex Camera Club – www. reflexcc.org.uk” If you’ve ever been asked if a magazine or somewhere could use your picture you’ve probably heard the words “we can’t pay you but we can give you a credit”. Apart from replying “credits don’t buy me food fool!” you should also give them your name and website so that they can publish that next to your picture, after they’ve paid you of course. This is what would be printed next to your picture if the club gave permission for it to be used. Of course we won’t ever give permission. That’s for you to do and so you can tell them what you want printed next to your picture.

Source - “Reflex Camera Club”.  Where the picture has come from. If it was you uploading it then it would be your name. But remember your only reading this because you didn’t upload the picture yourself!

Keywords - “Reflex Camera Club, Photography Group, Photography Society, Photography, Taken by member of Reflex Camera Club, All Rights Reserved, ©, Do not reproduce without written consent, Copyright remains with the original photographer.” These are automatically added to every picture that gets uploaded by the clubs Flickr account. If you look at a picture on Flickr you will see a section called “TAGS” that’s what Flickr calls keywords. They are the words that people search for to find your, or any, picture.


If you don’t agree to me using these phrases and words when I upload YOUR  pictures to the clubs Flickr account you need to let me know as I will be using this format from now on. If you decide you don’t like it and we cannot come up with replacement wording that is acceptable to everyone then you will have to upload your own pictures. Just remember if you don’t want me to use this and you don’t upload your own pictures you will never see your work displayed on the Blog, website or Flickr group.

An evening stroll.

I went on a pleasant stroll behind Temple Meads station with some other members of the Bristol Flickr Group on Sunday evening. Apart from a run in with a Security Guard a great time was had by all. If your interested then some of the pictures are starting to appear in this Flickr group and I’m sure more will be posted over the next few days. You can see many pictures with a Bristol theme and some of the ones from the evening walk in the Bristol Flickr Group as well.

Thanks to Myk for organising it yet again.

Practical Evening

The next meeting brings us another practical evening and as usual your encouraged to bring along your camera and take part. As well as a macro demonstration we’ll have someone available to talk to you about using and getting more out of Flickr. You can also ask any photography related questions and we’ll try our best to give you an answer. But lets get on to the main event of Thursday which will be a studio shoot with a band. We supply the lights, backdrop, musicians and even a smoke machine. You just turn up with your camera and get the most out of the evening.
Ask questions, mingle and talk with everyone. As well as it being a chance to learn some new techniques or ask questions, treat it as a social event. If you’ve not been coming to the club for long or just haven’t managed to be at many of the meetings it’s a great opportunity to get to know everyone. Although I can guarantee by the end of the evening I still won’t remember everyone’s name.

There are only two things we would like you to do if you turn up on Thursday.
The first is, if you take pictures of the band then please email, Dropbox or bring them in on a memory stick so that we can let them have copies. They are giving their time up, for free, for us. They didn’t ask us if we wanted to take pictures of them, we asked them to come along. So play fair and lets pay them back for their time by giving them the photo’s.

The second thing? That’s easy, come along and have fun, enjoy yourself and take some great pictures!

Round 3 results

I’ve done a few things differently this time. If you have a Flickr account then I’ve made it so that if you click your name you get taken to your Flickr ‘stream (if you have one and even if you haven’t posted anything to it for ages). If you have your winning picture on your Flickr stream then clicking that picture will take you to it on your Flickr ‘stream. If it’s not on your Flickr then you will get taken to the Clubs Flickr ‘stream.
I’m also trying out a new, and hopefully better, way of laying out the pictures. So If something doesn’t seem to be right with the layout then please let me know.

Competitions, theme’s and the gnashing of teeth

 

This weeks meeting we get to hear the results of Round 3 of the Open Competition. Which should be good, despite what might be said its still fairly open and a few people are vying for the title this year.

Now as you know we have a Flickr Group and those of you who receive the club email will know I’m always nagging you to join up. We’ll yep you’ve guessed it this is another one of those times. Although now you have even more incentive to join us. We’re starting a Flickr only themed competition. Each one will last for around 2 months, including the voting, and the winner gets to pick the subject for the next competition. If you want to see a list of the themes that have already been suggested or want to suggest some of your own then go take a look here. If you want to see the rules then they can be found hiding in the corner here. The first subject will be chosen randomly on Thursday. If your feel you need a kick to get you taking pictures then this could be the thing to get you out and snapping away.

This weeks meet and does anyone want to go to the Fair?

Those of you who are new to the club get to experience your first practical night this Thursday and your going to love it. (Of course if you don't enjoy yourself then it's not my fault and you really shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet!). We have Steve Cox coming along to do a practical demonstration on 'Off Camera Flash'. If your wondering what it is then take a look through this Blog and the pictures in this Flickr Group.. Some of you may remember Steve from the very start of last season when he was a judge for one of the rounds of our Open Competition (I believe he's wearing a bullet proof vest when he visits from now on). It should prove to be a good night with the chance to take some great images. So make sure you bring along your camera and join in. If you want a quick peek at some of Steve's work he has a Flickr 'Stream and a Website.

It's also a chance to grab someone and ask questions on just about anything related to photography. Although I'm afraid we don't know how to get any supermodels to pose for you or their phone numbers.

Hanneke is interested in visiting the Bridgewater Fair on the 2nd October to try out some Candid Street Photography, before any of you ask no it's not some new kind of sweet. There's plenty of discussion about it taking place on our Flickr Group Forum. You can go straight to the relevant thread by following THIS link. Although to add anything to the conversation you will have to be logged in. Which also means you need to sign up for Flickr.

Reflex Camera Club Competition Rules

Below are the rules of entry for the Club Competitions. I know at first glance they seem daunting and confusing but they are pretty simple really. If you want to download them to your own computer to print or read them at your leisure then they are available to download in PDF format from the club website HERE. If you need it then Adobe's free PDF reader can be downloaded HERE. Make sure you remove the tick in the box that says you want the McCaffe Security Scan Plus.
Please do take the time to read through the rules if you are planning on entering. As there is important information in there. They tell you everything you need to know on HOW to enter the competitions. What they don't tell you though is how to prepare your images. However, if you keep an eye on this blog then you will see over the course of the next few days a series of articles explaining how to resize your pictures using Photoshop, Lightroom and how to resize them for printing if you are planning on entering prints this year.

If you have any comments or need something explained you can either get in touch at the usual email address or ask on a Thursday night. There are two other ways that you can get help though. One is to sign up to Flickr and ask in our Clubs Group page (you will however need to be a fully paid up member of Reflex to join our Flickr Group), or you can ask in the Comments section of this Blog as we have now turned comments back on.



Open Competition

1. Members may enter up to three prints and/or three digital projected images in each round.
2. Prints and Projected Images are judged separately.
3. Prints may be of any size as long as they are mounted on card not larger than 50 x 40 cm.
4. Digital projected image entries: see Appendix for conditions of entry
5. Entries should be handed to the competition secretary by the closing date, as displayed on the notice board and in the programme.
6. An entry that has been awarded 1st, 2nd, 3rd or Highly Commended may not be entered in the Open competition again. Any not placed may be entered once more in another round.
7. Entrants are awarded points according to the scheme shown below.
8. At the end of the season, the entrant with most points in the print section will be awarded “Print Photographer of the Year”. The entrant with the most points in the projected images section will be awarded “Projected Image Photographer of the Year”. Points gained in print and projected images sections will be accumulated and the entrant with the greatest number of points overall will be “Photographer of the Year”.
9. Entries should reflect the entrant’s recent work.
10. All entries must be the work of the member. However, trade-processing of prints is permitted.
11. Any variation to these rules will be announced at club meetings and shown on the notice board.
12. The Competition Secretary’s decision is final, and he/she may:
a. Refuse to accept any entry that they consider does not comply with the spirit of these rules.
b. Vary the rules in exceptional circumstances provided the spirit of the Club is not prejudiced.
Points system
1. Entrants will be awarded one point for each projected image or print on the first occasion it is entered in the open section.
2. Additional points will be awarded for “placed” entries:
First - 8 points, Second - 6 points, Third - 4 points, Highly Commended - 1 point.
Trio Competition
All rules as “Open” but with the following changes:
1. The competition is judged “live” on the night.
2. Points awarded count towards print, projected image, and overall photographer of the year.
3. You may enter up to three sets of three projected images and/or prints, to be judged as sets. See appendix for special rules for digital projected images.
4. Entries may be brought on the night, but earlier submission will help the Competition Secretary.
John Hankin Shield (prints) & Stan Scantlebury Shield (projected images)
All rules as “Open” but with the following changes:
1. Each member may enter prints, projected images or both, up to a maximum of 3 each.
2. The judge will select the best image, print & projected image.
3. No points will be awarded.
4. Only images that have been entered in the Open section during the current season can be entered, including those that have been “placed”. Individual images from Trio entries are acceptable.

Appendix
Digital Projected Images – conditions of entry for all Club Competitions

1. Images will be projected in a landscape format of 1400 by 1050 pixels maximum and should be sized accordingly.
2. Portrait (vertical) images should be no larger than 1050 pixels high.
3. Images must be correctly aligned for projection.
4. The image must be in jpeg (.JPG) format with sRGB colour space. The JPG should be saved at maximum quality (this is not a requirement but is in your own interests!)
5. A title MUST be provided for each entry – the title will form part of the name of the file.
6. The file name will consist of:
a. A serial number (01, 02 or 03) followed by an underscore (_)
b. The title of the entry (which may include letters, numbers and spaces but NO other characters) followed by an underscore
c. The name of the entrant (which may include letters, numbers and spaces but NO other characters)
d. As an example: “01_My wonderful image_Fred Bloggs”
7. Entries may be submitted by email, on CD, or on a memory stick.
a. PLEASE ENTER BY EMAIL IF POSSIBLE! Send an email to reflexcc@gmail.com with the image files as attachments.
b. If you have to submit entries on CD or memory stick, you MUST create a folder with your name (e.g. “Fred Bloggs”) containing your entries. This allows rapid copying of entries on Club nights
Digital entries for Trio Competition
1. Your sets of three images must be contained within SINGLE jpg files.
2. The overall projected image size limits are the same as for all other Club competitions
3. As long as the above rules are observed, you are free to do what you like with your images.

NOTE
External competitions (such as the WCPF inter-club digital image competition) have their own entry requirements which are different from ours. PLEASE READ THE RULES CAREFULLY before submitting entries.

New Season, New Look

.

If your reading this then the chances are you've noticed it looks a little different. What you haven't? Go put your glasses on and look again. It's not just a new colour scheme for the Blog its a whole new website for the club. I'd like you all to join me in thanking Joules for doing an outstanding job and putting up with all the demands and moaning from those of us involved.
Here's a short walk through some of the biggest changes.
When you visit the new site you'll see that it looks a lot different. First thing is slap bang on screen a photograph from one of you! Remember a while ago, seems like months to me, I asked you all to be on the lookout for invites into a new Flickr group. Well this is where we are putting those images. Right in the face of anyone who visits the site. The picture changes randomly each time you visit that page. So if you feel left out and want one of your pictures there, sign up to Flickr and add me as a friend or email in a link to your Photostream.

Wait there's more!

The about us page now gives people a much better idea of what we as a club like to do.

The programme page has received one of the biggest overhauls. Now as well as being able to download a PDF file of the meetings you can also look at a Calendar which not only lists our meetings but also shows events in our local area. So with a simple click of the mouse you can see what's on. Hanneke does a superb job of keeping that calendar up to date. So you should all buy her a cup of tea next time you see her!

The News link still takes you to this Blog but does so with much more panache.

The Galleries, my personal favourite. Remember the old one, just a few stale looking links to various websites. Well it's all high tech now! Slap bang in the middle is something you may not have seen before. It's called Cooliris. Remember the pictures on the front page? Well this shows all of them at once. You can even make it fill your screen up to see the pictures in all their glory. Just click on the bottom left icon of two white, diagonal arrows. Hang on though because, if you scroll down the page you will see links to individual members Flickr sites. Not just boring links though, click on one of them and you will see just how magnificent the pictures from your friends are. Of course if you haven't replied to my email telling me its ok to feature your Flickr page here then your name won't be on the list. No Flickr account? Then go sign up, it's free! I have to stress you have to have told me,by email, its ok to put you on this list otherwise you can't be added. If you have agreed to it and your name still isn't on it then just give it a week or so. We're still addressing a few issues.

The contact page just lists different ways to get in touch with the club. It looks great though. As does the Find Us page. Yeah I know its missing the clubs meeting address, it's being added soon.

That brings us to the last page. The links to other website's. If you have a private website that you want added to the list then tell us about it.

If you think we need to add a website to the list. If we've forgotten something. If something isn't right. If you feel we should be doing something differently.

Tell us about it! Because if you don't we won't be able to correct it.

Making Flickr Work for Us!

For those of you that don't know there has been discussion on better ways to use Flickr and we've come up with a few suggestions including changing the website to utilise the clubs pool of photographs. One of the things that is in the process of being created is a separate Flickr group, called "Reflex Camera Club - Admin". The aim of creating this group is so that we can invite photographs, from club members that have Flickr accounts, into it and thus make it easier for them to be used on the club's website. So far only a few of the club are members of this group and only those that are members will be able to choose photographs to be added into this group. The intent is not to invite all members into it but only have, at the most, all committee members in the group. That does NOT mean only a select few people will have photographs in the new group it just means that only a few people will be able to choose the pictures that go into it.

There is no intention at all to create an elitist group of members or to create anything that only a select few ever get to do. One of the aims is to use at least one picture from each club member.

Of course we can only use the pictures from members that are on Flickr. Hence the push to get people to join and upload pictures. By doing it this way we can have a tighter control of the images used on the front of the website. If you want to have your pictures on the new club website you will need a Flickr account as that is the only way that we will be using to add pictures to our website to start with.  Starting from Friday we will be inviting individual photographs into the new Flickr group. You will see a request for you to add a picture into the group. If you accept you are agreeing to us using it on the clubs website and for promotional purposes (not to make money but to increase the profile of the club). The copyright for any of the images we use will remain with you and if we want to use it for anything other than the website we will make every effort to contact you and check that it's O.K. to use it first.

We also have some other ways which we hope to use Flickr to promote the club and to get you more involved. I hope you will join us on Flickr. It really is easy to use and it lets you see and show more images than you otherwise would.

This new group will also be used to hold copies of the club's competition winning photo's so that I can use them on the Blog, which for a photography club, is sadly lacking in photographs. If you have any ideas for the Blog then let me know them as well.
